Topic: Trouble saving video after editing mov file

I am completely new to video editing.  I recently got myself a Canon Rebel T1i, which has the option of shooting video, which it stores as mov file on an SD card.  I would like to edit these files - mostly cut out scenes that are unsharp or otherwise undesired - and came across Avidemux.  I installed version 2.5.1, can open the mov files without a problem, and learned from the Avidemux Wiki how to delete the undesired scenes.  So far so good.

If I then use file, save, save video; I get a file that has just the bare filename without ending (no avi, mpg or mp4), regardless what I choose under 'Format'.  Even if I try to manually open that file, VLC player will not open it.  What am I doing wrong?  I am guessing it has something to do with decoding, but I have no clue about that stuff and what settings to use or what to look for.  Any help would be appreciated!

Many thanks

Frank

PS:  I am using Vista Home Basic SP2, if that makes a difference.

PPS: I got rid of the audio file by choosing audio, main track, none.

Sreenshot taken while saving as avi.  Hoping that it would reveal which parameters I set wrong.

Re: Trouble saving video after editing mov file

You have to add file extension manually (so when you save file, name it as video.avi).

Re: Trouble saving video after editing mov file

I have tried that, of course, and it makes no difference.  VLC player will not open it.

Also, if you open a file from VLC player (instead of double clicking on it) it makes no difference if a file name includes an extension or not.  The player will open the file if it is ok, or not if it isn't.  There is a problem with my files other than that the extension is missing, and I am trying to find out what that problem is.

Many thanks in advance for your help.

Frank

Re: Trouble saving video after editing mov file

Update - it turns out my camera's mov files use the H.264 codec.  Some people claim you HAVE to use Quick Time Pro to edit them.  Is that true or can I make this work with Avidemux?  I really like the look and feel of Avidemux, but if I can't open the edited files in any player...   I have tried a gazillion combinations of video codec and format when saving, but so far no luck.

Re: Trouble saving video after editing mov file

AVIdemux can edit H.264, but not frame accurately in some cases. Does it work better if you select Format: MP4 ?

Re: Trouble saving video after editing mov file

Thanks for bearing with me.  I've tried AVI, MPEG, and MP4 as format with various codecs that I thought sounded like they might be a good fit.  Kinda hard to guess though, seeing that I know next to nothing about codecs.

So just choosing MP4 as format is no help.  What codec do you suggest I use it with?  Any other format/codec combinations worth trying.

As an aside, H.264 seems to be a Mac thing, and works particularly well with their Quicktime software.  I installed the free Quicktime player and tried that instead of VLC.  That also didn't work.

Re: Trouble saving video after editing mov file

H.264 is universal standard. So it works on all operating systems as long there is a codec for it. Xvid+mp3 inside AVI is one option that should work. If it doesn't, could you share us short sample file so I can open bug ticket for this?

Re: Trouble saving video after editing mov file

Use the Information button in the toolbar of avidemux. It will show the info about the used codecs.

Re: Trouble saving video after editing mov file

Having the same problem!? I save a file just like the screenshot above, change the file to xxx.avi but adivemux will just not open the saved file? Very annoying after 5 hours of editing!!! It happily plays the original file but will not play the saved file? I've loaded and uninstalled avidemux twice just in case there was a problem.

Re: Trouble saving video after editing mov file

The full error message is as follows.
Spidermonkey ECMAScript Error
C:\Program Files\Avidemux2.5\xxx.avi: line 1:
Msg: SyntaxError: illegal character
Not an ECMAScript file. Try open it with 'File' -> 'Open...'

Still doesn't open if I try to load via file -> open??????????

Re: Trouble saving video after editing mov file

What does tool called Mediainfo say about that AVI file?

Thanks for the help.

Re: Trouble saving video after editing mov file

You shouldn't store MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 video inside AVI container. AVIdemux should be able to open that, so if you could check from %appdata%\avidemux\admlog.txt where the opening via File -> Open... fails, I could open bug ticket for this.
EDIT:
Or if you could share us small sample file that doesn't open in AVIdemux, it would be even better.

Re: Trouble saving video after editing mov file

AHHHHHHH HA! Looks like I found out why it don't work! I only found out about naming the file an avi after I first read it here, so I tried to rename the file as an avi but that didn't work so I did a test run and named a file an avi BEFORE I saved it and it then loaded up fine! Sorry to waste your time 007! Thanks for your help.

Re: Trouble saving video after editing mov file

I am having the same problem, but don't follow your "A HA!" moment.  Can you clarify what you (or he) did to save a playable file?

I am opening a .mov file, and then attempting to save it as an .avi, or .mp4, I don't really care.  (Seemingly) regardless of the format, I am left with an file that is unable to be opened by quick time, windows media player, or VLC.

Note: I am saving the file as xxx.avi, or xxx.mp4.

Re: Trouble saving video after editing mov file

hoffm426: does tool called Mediainfo identify the files AVIdemux outputs?

Re: Trouble saving video after editing mov file

MediaInfo, is that within Avidemux?  I searched the menus, and also did a windows search, but did not figure out what you're talking about.

Re: Trouble saving video after editing mov file

Could you share us short .MOV file that can used to replicate this?

Re: Trouble saving video after editing mov file

Google docs doesn't allow me to download it. Complains about not being able to virus scan it, and then nothing happens.

Re: Trouble saving video after editing mov file

Any help?
Recap:
- Trying to save an edited .mov file
- I name the file xxx.avi, or xxx.mpg and it creates an unusable file (error messages ~file type is unrecognized)  --> have tried using quicktime, wmplayer, and vlc.
* I'm running xp (@work)

I have a mediainfo screenshot of both the input and output files:
http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/wV … directlink (input)
http://picasaweb.google.com/Hoffman.Mat … 9140203570 (output)

I also have posted a sample .mov file at two locations (there were complaints that google-docs didn't work):

Re: Trouble saving video after editing mov file

Works just fine in here. I did Video: Copy, Audio: Copy, Format: AVI with AVIdemux r6502 and the output plays fine in VLC 1.1.2

Re: Trouble saving video after editing mov file

Yeah, I think I figured it out too.

I was trying to edit, and then save as a xxx.avi.  --> I should have copy/copy/avi save as xxx.avi, then edit, then re-save.

Thanks everyone for your help.
