Topic: Trouble saving video after editing mov file

I am completely new to video editing.  I recently got myself a Canon Rebel T1i, which has the option of shooting video, which it stores as mov file on an SD card.  I would like to edit these files - mostly cut out scenes that are unsharp or otherwise undesired - and came across Avidemux.  I installed version 2.5.1, can open the mov files without a problem, and learned from the Avidemux Wiki how to delete the undesired scenes.  So far so good.

If I then use file, save, save video; I get a file that has just the bare filename without ending (no avi, mpg or mp4), regardless what I choose under 'Format'.  Even if I try to manually open that file, VLC player will not open it.  What am I doing wrong?  I am guessing it has something to do with decoding, but I have no clue about that stuff and what settings to use or what to look for.  Any help would be appreciated!

Many thanks

Frank

PS:  I am using Vista Home Basic SP2, if that makes a difference.

PPS: I got rid of the audio file by choosing audio, main track, none.

Re: Trouble saving video after editing mov file

You have to add file extension manually (so when you save file, name it as video.avi).

Re: Trouble saving video after editing mov file

I have tried that, of course, and it makes no difference.  VLC player will not open it.

Also, if you open a file from VLC player (instead of double clicking on it) it makes no difference if a file name includes an extension or not.  The player will open the file if it is ok, or not if it isn't.  There is a problem with my files other than that the extension is missing, and I am trying to find out what that problem is.

Many thanks in advance for your help.

Re: Trouble saving video after editing mov file

Update - it turns out my camera's mov files use the H.264 codec.  Some people claim you HAVE to use Quick Time Pro to edit them.  Is that true or can I make this work with Avidemux?  I really like the look and feel of Avidemux, but if I can't open the edited files in any player...   I have tried a gazillion combinations of video codec and format when saving, but so far no luck.

Re: Trouble saving video after editing mov file

AVIdemux can edit H.264, but not frame accurately in some cases. Does it work better if you select Format: MP4 ?

Re: Trouble saving video after editing mov file

Thanks for bearing with me.  I've tried AVI, MPEG, and MP4 as format with various codecs that I thought sounded like they might be a good fit.  Kinda hard to guess though, seeing that I know next to nothing about codecs.

So just choosing MP4 as format is no help.  What codec do you suggest I use it with?  Any other format/codec combinations worth trying.

As an aside, H.264 seems to be a Mac thing, and works particularly well with their Quicktime software.  I installed the free Quicktime player and tried that instead of VLC.  That also didn't work.

Re: Trouble saving video after editing mov file

H.264 is universal standard. So it works on all operating systems as long there is a codec for it. Xvid+mp3 inside AVI is one option that should work. If it doesn't, could you share us short sample file so I can open bug ticket for this?

Re: Trouble saving video after editing mov file

Use the Information button in the toolbar of avidemux. It will show the info about the used codecs.
