I have a similar (or the same) problem that was already described in these posts:

I don't have pulseaudio installed.
2.6.4 completely freezes with AlsaDefault driver after starting and stopping video. No error messages. Last output on commandline is
Quote[Playback] Latency is now 0
[startThread] Starting thread...
[startThread] Thread created and started
[HandleAction] ************ PlayAvi **************
[cleanup] Cleaning up..
[stop] [audioDevice]Stopping device... DeviceStarted -> DeviceStop_Requested
DeviceStop_Requested -> DeviceStop_Granted
[AudioDeviceThreaded] Exiting loop
No sound with AlsaHw0
Quote[Alsa]Error setting format.
No sound with AlsaDmix
Quote[Alsa]Error opening PCM device dmix
No sound with Jack
Quote[JACK] For play this, you need avidemux compiled with libsamplerate support
No sound with oss
Quote[OSSS] Error initializing OSS: Error : 16
So, it's completely unusable for me.
Any hints would be great, also on how to enable libsamplerate support.
Version 2.6.4, built with bootStrap.bash --deb
System is Debian stable (wheezy).
