The default ones, which appears to be copy for both and output file set as "avi muxer". Original file is a mp4 file if it helps.

I'm talking about the codec of the source file. mp4 is a container, not a codec. Press "i" in Avidemux menu.

Video codec is h264 and audio is AAC.

h264 (AVC) video can be a problem for a VFW container (avi).
If you do put AVC into avi then playback is usually fine via directshow filters.

A video editor program like avidemux needs more information and access to the structures that make up these media files.
Hence not so good to put AVC into AVI.

Kind of ditto for the audio. Meaning AAC audio can be okay in AVI.

AVI goes fine with Xvid and AC3, so maybe transcoding to those is an option.

Video codec is h264 and audio is AAC.
That's why you are having problems. for h.264 + aac, use mp4v2.

Since the original source was in mp4 I think the OP just wanted to know why remuxing into avi didn't work.
The h.264 video in this mp4 is probably to complex for muxing into avi.

But, try configuring the avi muxer to use the opendml format (it might work!).
