Title: Theora support
Post by: tuqueque on April 03, 2009, 01:44:38 AM
Hello, as you can see, this is my first post here in this forum... and just in case someone ask me to read other threads or posts before doing it myself... i\'ve done that already. I\'m a polite forum user ;)

I\'m a new Avidemux user but not a newbie in video encoding and encoding programs (not an expert though)...

The title of the thread explains my humble request.. It would be GREAT if Avidemux adds support for Theora encoding... Specially with recent \"thusnelda\" developings that makes Theora much more attractive for general people.

I\'ve read other posts and threads (like HERE (http://avidemux.org/admForum/viewtopic.php?pid=33298#p33298) and HERE (http://avidemux.org/admForum/viewtopic.php?pid=33300#p33300)) but since the english forum is closed, i\'m starting a new thread here with the same (and more up to date?) request where I think is more apropriate anyway since this is about the dev branch.

Greets.
tuqueque.

I also like Avidemux include Theora support.

Theora is getting better, take a look at the last update :

I\'d like theora support too, \'cause Record my desktop uses Theora/ogg and it would be cool if i could  transcode it to xvid or whatever without haveing to first use mencoder (loosing quality in both video and audio) then recompresing it again.

Furthermore, more = better   :-D

I would love theora encoding support as well! And a preset that can output a file that works with the html5 - video - element!

(For now I use ffmpeg2theora (http://v2v.cc/~j/ffmpeg2theora/examples.html))

just to let you know, theora 1.1 has just been released

Quote from: \"Phoronix\"Theora 1.1 Thusnelda Is Released
Posted by Michael Larabel on September 25, 2009
Theora, the open and royalty-free format that comes from the same folks that work on the Ogg Vorbis audio formmat, has officially reached version 1.1. Theora 1.1 (codenamed \"Thusnelda\") is much-improved over version 1.0, which was reached last November.

Some of the improvements in the Theora 1.1 encoder include rate-distortion optimization, better motion search, adaptive quantization, a real rate-control module, support for 4:2:2 and 4:4:4 video, and many more changes.

A description of the major changes in Theora Thusnelda along with source download links to libtheora 1.1 are available from the Xiph.org mailing list.

see also this blog
http://hacks.mozilla.org/2009/09/theora-1-1-released/
talks about improvment about rate control and the ability to make two-passes.
should make easier to use in avidemux...

I would also love to try out Theora, but my favourite video encoding software doesn\'t support it ;)

Anyone has any ideas for how we make it happen? I don\'t have enough coding skills to pull it of. Anyone else?

Avidemux would have to use Theora as a library ;)

So what really would be interesting for Avidemux is the latest improved Theora encoding library (aka \"Thusnelda\").

However after testing Theora, I must say that in it\'s current state Theora is kind of useless for any practical purpose.

Even with the latest improvements in Thusnelda, the quality isn\'t anywhere near x264. Even old Xvid performs better!

I totally agree that it\'s nice to have a patent-free alternative to H.264, MPEG-4 ASP and VC-1/WMV9.

But at the moment I certainly wouldn\'t use/recommend Theora for any quality encode :(

Just for reminder, I think in 2012 now a moment for Avidemux to support Theora format. Because many other software already support theora and many users already requested for it. Though with all of argumentation to refuse implementation of Theora in Avidemux, I think with so many request then the implementation of theora in Avidemux wouldn't be bad.
