Title: Total Newb: Can't save successfully!
Post by: EssaelBosch on May 10, 2012, 09:29:24 PM
I have an .avi that I want to cut a 10 second chunk out of so that it plays alone and I can upload it to YouTube or similar.

When I try to save the selected section (using the Marker A & B) no file extension shows up. I caught mention of this on the forum, and added my own as suggested.

.mpg wouldn't play at all and .avi is totally out of sync with the sound.

Any suggestions? I'm sure it's me that's doing something wrong! If anyone can walk me through exactly how to achieve my intended goal, I will adore you forever!

What version are you using? 2.5.4,  2.5.5,  2.5.6 or the very experimental 2.6 (beta)?
Believe the extension issue was fixed in windows to?

Perhaps this guide made by Ronnie Tucker (UK) can help you with your quest?

Tried following that tutorial. I've ended up with a playable file, but:

1) The clip does not start where I set Marker A. It cuts in a good 6 seconds late.
2) Because of this, the sound is totally out of sync, as the sound runs correctly from where I cut it.

Frustration!

Using Avidemux, you could try to reencode the sound, it sometimes helps, and also use the timeshift option. At last, check that you don't have a h.264 codec.

In most video it is important to make the A marker on intra frame. If you don't have marker @ intra frame or (keyframe), vital information is lost in previous frames to rebuild the image in the current frame. If you need to append to this clip you cut the same would go for B marker.
You can achieve this when you reached the cutting point by selecting this point only by using the keyboard up or down arrow. Or on interface only with (http://www.avidemux.org/admWiki/lib/exe/fetch.php?media=using:previous_keyframe-gtk.png) (http://www.avidemux.org/admWiki/lib/exe/fetch.php?media=using:next_keyframe-gtk.png) or (http://www.avidemux.org/admWiki/lib/exe/fetch.php?media=using:previous_keyframe-qt.png) (http://www.avidemux.org/admWiki/lib/exe/fetch.php?media=using:next_keyframe-qt.png) intra frame (keyframe).
At this stage don't use: (http://www.avidemux.org/admWiki/lib/exe/fetch.php?media=using:previous_frame-qt.png) (http://www.avidemux.org/admWiki/lib/exe/fetch.php?media=using:next_frame-qt.png) or (http://www.avidemux.org/admWiki/lib/exe/fetch.php?media=using:previous_frame-gtk.png) (http://www.avidemux.org/admWiki/lib/exe/fetch.php?media=using:next_frame-gtk.png) frame.

Okay, that worked, thank you!

Unfortunately now I have about 4 seconds of film at the start that I don't want. Is there any way to get rid of this?

Move A marker forward to next intra frame (keyframe). Hope one time someone comes up with plug-in that does a fade in from black intra frame (keyframe) to marker B position. If you have a black intra frame from same source, copy that one and paste it to 1st location and delete then original frame from movie. Do the same with some black none intra frame and replace the other original frames.
All I can think off.
