Please uninstall whatever Avidemux versions are currently installed (anything older than 2.7.1 is legacy and unsupported) and try out either r190103 from here (https://avidemux.org/nightly/vsWin64/) if you have a 64 bits Windows or r190104 from here (https://avidemux.org/nightly/win32/) if it is 32 bits.

If problems persist, please provide details (admlog.txt from %localappdata%\avidemux, literally quoted Windows error messages etc.).

Regrettably, you still haven't provided any usable information. Without such info and not having a Windows 8.1 installation to test it is impossible to assess what is going on.

What do you mean by "program section"? This is the path to the folder where admlog.txt is stored by Avidemux. The path contains an environment variable %localappdata%, enter this path into the location bar of Windows Explorer or using the "run" dialog to open this folder.

If Avidemux doesn't even arrive at the point when it can create the folder and the file, there should be some error messages from Windows which could shed light on the problem.

Please compress (7z, zip, no rar) the full log and attach it to your reply. The end of the log you posted doesn't include the version information (it may be an old log).

In other words, Avidemux (a win64 win32 nightly from 2019-01-04) runs just fine. What is the problem?

edit: oops, it was not a 64bit build...
...and the operating system is Windows 8, not Windows 8.1.

Does the latest build from https://avidemux.org/nightly/vsWin64/ ("Avidemux_2.7.1 VC++ 64bits 190109.exe") fail to run? What about r190113 from here (https://avidemux.org/nightly/win64/)?

yeah thats from 2004 youre looking at.

I can confirm that the Xvid encoder is broken (it crashes on Linux actually in the libxvidcore library, but maybe hangs on Windows, can't test at the moment). You could use the Mpeg4 ASP (ff) encoder for now if you really have to use legacy stuff (DivX and AVI container).

FFmpeg crashes when trying to encode using xvid4 too, so I think it is libxvidcore which is broken.

libxvidcore works on Fedora only when built with assembly disabled, otherwise crashes immediately.

so do i just reinstall FFmpeg  and the mpeg encoders to?

???

Please test the other DIVX video encoder in Avidemux --> "Mpeg4 ASP (ff)".

I can reproduce the hang you experience neither on Windows 10 nor on Windows 7 using any of the official nightly builds, so the libxvidcore crash discovered on Fedora Linux may be completely unrelated.

i managed to make an mp4 file but it took hours and hours to encode.
i put 2.7 on my laptop on windows 10 and works fine,i can make avi's in a matter of minutes

Which encoder did you use for that? "Mpeg4 ASP (ff)" should be quite fast. "HEVC (x265)" is unbearably slow on anything not top-notch performance-wise.

i dont remember,i was trying different ones and they wouldnt work at all, then finally got one to work but as i said it took along long time to do.
is there some way i can fix this to encode avi as thats what files ive been using

If the problem is not limited to a single encoder, it is not releated to a particular encoder. Does it persist if you don't start encoding right away but instead use "File" --> "Add to Queue" option and run the task later using the command line version of Avidemux via Jobs GUI? This would allow to judge whether the problem is in some way related to Qt.

Does the CPU run at high load during this "doing nothing" encoding phase?

I have no Windows 8 installation to test whether the issue is specific to your system or to Windows 8 in general.

Do you know anyone else with Windows 8 or Windows 8.1 who would volunteer to test Avidemux nightlies? Because if this is really a problem with Avidemux and not your system, this won't be fixed at this rate (and frankly speaking, in any case the proper solution would be upgrading to Windows 10 as Windows 8 is left to rot in the roadside ditch).
