One small addition: I'm not aware of a way to extract the content of the Qt Installer Framework generated package without running the installer, so if the Avidemux VC++ installer package is all you have, you need to install it somewhere first (e.g. in a VM) to get hold of the application directory, which you can copy (you don't need to copy the uninstaller and the installation manifest) to a different location with write permissions and use it as a portable app thereafter.

all Avidemux builds are portable when launched with the command line option

--portable

or with avidemux.exe renamed to avidemux_portable.exe, no matter how packaged.

I've done this, but there's an uninstall entry in the control panel and there seems to be a bunch of registry entries. Is it really portable?

Obviously, on the system where the installer has been run, there will be an uninstall entry until you run the uninstaller. Avidemux from the copied application directory doesn't create any registry entries at all.
