Title: GH5 footage audio problem
Post by: LifeOfBrian on May 04, 2021, 09:43:26 AM
Hi everyone and thank you to the developers of Avidemux for a VERY useful tool! Even for professionals.

I use Avidemux almost exclusively in copy mode as an on-the-fly cut tool in the field to cut away useless footage at the end of a shoot, before storing, uploading or sending off to a studio for post production. This way I keep the files "small" and in original quality.

This works well for my action cams, drone etc but... I can't seem to get the audio from the Panasonic GH5 to play OR copy correctly. The stream appears scrambled and inaudible. The footage from the GH5 is MPEG-4 AVC 10bit H264 High 4:2:2 All Intra 4096x2160 / 24fps at 400mbps with a 24bit audio stream at 96khz in an mov container.

I currently use VirtualDub2 successfully for this task, but since VD can't direct stream copy non-I frame footage, I'm forced to work with both tools. Needless to say I would really like to just use one. Preferably Avidemux.

According to the update history PCM audio with MPEG-4/mov footage should be completely compatible with Avidemux by now, no? I've tried many different settings and versions: nightly, VC, portable, 2.7.7, 2.7.8, 2.7.9... Same result. Am I doing something wrong??

Below is an audio example of the playback I get from the GH5 footage in Avidemux, along with a screenshot of the audio profile.

Really hope someone can resolve this issue!

Cheers :)

Please provide an original sample video (short, 1 to ~2 minutes in duration, if possible), using WeTransfer (no email address required despite the interface trying to suggest otherwise!), Mega, Dropbox or Google Drive.

Could be a problem with sampling rate (I don't have any 96 kHz samples at the moment).

Please shoot a brief video, 1 minute long. It cannot be that big then.

No sample needed anymore, I can reproduce the issue with Avidemux' own output, created by adding an external 24-bit PCM audio track to a video and saving to MOV in copy mode. The video plays fine in mpv. Looking into it.

Cheers mate! I tried to reply here but for some reason it wouldn't let me. Said "CleanTalk: ***Forbidden. Please enable JavaScript***" So, I sent you my reply with link to original footage.

Much appreciate any help!

Should be fixed by [demuxers/Mp4] Fix parsing of sound sample description version 2 (https://github.com/mean00/avidemux2/commit/a202af0622ec6ad241104e06fa9fdad21635e6ce), verified with your sample video. Please try a future nightly build – native (https://avidemux.org/nightly/vsWin64) or cross-compiled (https://avidemux.org/nightly/win64).

Thank you very much for your report.

No worries. Cheers mate! Looking forward to it. Any thoughts on when that build might be avail?

I asked for nightly refresh yesterday. If nothing happens within a couple of days, I'll ask again, but I am not going to press the maintainer. You should be able to cross-build your own Avidemux on Linux for Windows anytime, it is well documented (https://github.com/mean00/avidemux2/blob/master/cross-compiling.txt).
