Hello.

This is my first post in this forum.

I am converting a video : MPEG-4 XVid, 24.4 Mbps 1280x720 30fps, 128kbps Audio MP3.
File size: 8187mb

I've tried: XVid-HD720 4200kpbs and it took 54 minutes to generate a file of 1436mb (avi).
I've also tried: x264 4200kbps and it took 64 minutes to generate a file of 1433mb (mkv).
The quality is the same.

It is normal for the x264 codec take longer to process?

I'm using avidemux 2.6.6, AMD FX-4100, 8GB DDR3-1866, HD500GB 2.5 ".

Thank's.

Yes, it's more complicated. Zipping with .7z is slower than .zip (but better).

The quality is the same.

At the same bit rate, avc preserves more information than xvid.
So in essence the quality is better, but that difference becomes less as the bit rate increases.
Whether or not you can perceive that quality also depends on the spatial and temporal quality of the source.
Bit like, a BMW and a VW are both waiting at the traffic lights - which one is faster?

Since your source is running at 0.8 bits per pixel it should be of very high quality (may not be, but can be!).
If it is then you should be able to see that avc is the better option.
