Random file save errors on MP4 and MKV
« on: December 23, 2018, 06:09:43 PM »
AVIDemux seems to have some random problems with saving files.  I've noticed this on edited files when trying to save to MP4 or MKV.

With MKV, all seems fine until the very end.  There, it goes from A Few Seconds left in the save to a time of between over 100 and 500 hours!  In effect, it will never complete.  With really short files, like 30 seconds, a file may be saved, but play it back and it plays back as choppy video.  When these happen, just Abort the 500 hours save time remaining and recreate the file immediately afterwards or just recreate immediately the small duration file, and the MKV is saved properly, without problems.

With MP4, it's a bit more insidious.  MP4 saves always complete, but about half the time, they take 2 to 3 times longer than they normally should when the file save errors occur.  The files are always saved, but they never play.  When played, they display a black screen and have a running time listed of over 13 hours!  Which is obviously wrong.  When this happens with MP4, the only fix is to close down AVIDemux, reopen it, reload the Project file, and save again.  And, there's no guarantee it won't happen again on the 2nd attempt.  Eventually, it works, but it shouldn't have to be this difficult.

With both issues, it happens randomly.  Generally with MKV, though, it always happens on the first attempt to save a file.  The 2nd save works.  With MP4, the issue is entirely random.

Thanks!

You might want to try the "VC" nightly
I suspect it may fix some random problems

Yeah, I'll give it a shot.  Thanks!  Was not aware there was anything like a "nightly build" for AVIDemux.

That does seem to have to have fixed the MKV problem.  I didn't test the MP4 problem.  I simulated an edit of an AVI, just randomly deleting everything but 10 minutes from the middle of it.  I saved it to MKV using my usual settings and it saved it fine.  Played fine, too.  If the problem was going to present itself, it would almost always, 99% of the time, happen on the first attempt to save the edited MKV file.
