Can anyone recommend a format and container for me? I want to get as close as possible in quality and file size to my avi original but be able to apply video filters. If I can get the same quality but with a smaller file that's fine too. Thanks

AVC (=h.264) + AAC + MKV (or MP4v2)
Yeah, That's QT, not MKV. good for sharing. Many TV need such format. At the least my Bravia :P
But maybe audio with MP3 encoding. Smaller without loss.

? QT is not a codec.
mp3 is lossy.
My dad has a Bravia, you will need to make some tests first because I know it won't read every combination.
As I recall aac+mp4 works but not mkv.

QT (quicktime aka mp4) is from Apple. That leads into a well known format.

I meant the first combination would go for TV sets like Bravia. I'd repeat MP4-AVC + FAAC + MP4v2, surely it works for Sony thingy too (I'm using that with good results). Funny that the Bravia running linux but few format are supported.

I was telling for small size files, but I supposed for PC players, which might play all formats. MKV would give its best for size and quality.
