Hi, I'm a complete novice to this, so please bear with me.
I have a collection of .avi files and most play perfectly on my TV, but there are 2 that say "unsupported format".

I have loaded a working and non-working .avi into Avidemux 2.6 and there's a difference in their video codec as follows...

Good file = XVID
Bad file = DX50

Both use MP3 audio.

From what I've read, my TV probably only supports certain codecs, so I thought that I have to re-encode my bad file using using XVID as a video output. I selected the option "Mpeg4 ASP (xvid4)".

Two hours or more later I get a new file but it still won't play (still get "unsupported format").

When I open my new file in Avidemux, the video codec is now "DIVX". I thought it would have said "XVID" like what I requested.

How can I convert this file to "XVID"?

Thanks in advance.

These are FourCC codes for 2 different encoders to create MPEG4 Part 2 (MPEG-4 ASP). So both should be decoded by every MPEG-4 ASP decoder.

You can try changing DX50 to XVID by simply renaming it using a FourCC change software.

Or you may try re-encoding audio only to MP3 CBR (constant bitrate):
Video: Copy
Audio: MP3    Configure: Bitrate mode: CBR
Format: AVI

The specs of the two video files would be helpful. Use MediaInfo to determine those.

I can't believe it was so easy to fix, took like 5 seconds.
I have spent hours on this already!
Thanks so much.
