Can not launch as icon (Ubuntu 12.10, gnome desktop)

I can run avidemux3_qt4 r855 from the command line, but if I lock the icon to the launcher and then try to launch from that icon it will not come up. I tried wrapping the call to avidemux in a script, redirecting output to /dev/null, but there was no improvement.

Is there some trick to this?

Ubuntu 12.10, 64-bit, gnome desktop.

browse to /usr/bin/ right click on avidemux3_qt4 and make link, move link to desktop. in properties add icon.
