So I went to this site . . .

http://www.wikihow.com/Transfer-VHS-Tapes-to-DVD-or-Other-Digital-Formats

And followed the instructions.  But when it comes to Avidemux I think it's referring to an older version, because I cannot locate some of the settings it wants me to adjust.  I.E. MPEG-2 (avcodec)
so that when I try to convert the .avi to .mpg, I get the following error message:

Audio
Cannot set up audio encoder, make sure your stream is compatible with audio encoder (number of channels, bitrate, format).

I did follow all of the instructions exactly up to the point of using Avidemux.  Can anyone tell me how to set Avidemux to do this and not get this error?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Avidemux Main menu: Auto: Optical Disc: DVD and check other settings (filters you did set eventually)
If you get complaints on audio, think the setting is MP2 (lav) Mixer: Stereo: [v] Resampling (Hz): 48000

No luck, I got the same message.
Some more detail:
The instructions say on the Video drop-down menu , choose "MPEG-2 (avcodec)"
but I cannot find that option, the closest I can find is "MPEG-2 (ff).

I can't find a "Use Xvid rate control" option to see if it's checked or not.

On the Audio Format drop-down menu, I'm supposed to choose "MPEG-PS (A+V)"
but the closest I can find to that is "MPEG-PS Muxer (ff)".

If anyone has any ideas, please let me know.
Thanks.

Probably you're not using avidemux 2.5.6?
Normally you would: take step 1,2 and 3 shown in red: (click on images to view enlarged)

and now take step 1 and 2

avidemux 2.5.6 can be found here: http://sourceforge.net/projects/avidemux/files/avidemux/2.5.6/
