Setting character encoding for subtitles in 2.6.8

How do I set a character encoding for embeddind subtitles in 2.6.8? Is there an assumed encoding? It seems to be utf-8 in Linux, is that different on windows? I could not find anything about this, SRT filer used to have an encoding preference, but not the current srt/ssa/ass filter.
