avidemux 2.6.11&12 freezes up with widows 10 64 bit
« on: March 19, 2016, 04:30:11 PM »
For some time I have been unable to use avidemux.  It gets so far and then just stops.  Its happening with mkv and ts files as source.  Its the same whether I try to make an mkv or an mp4 file.

In my last attempt the avidemux got as far as starting the second pass before freezing - not responding.  I loaded again and it used the previous first pass to start the second pass before freezing again halfway through.  When I loaded it again it just crashed leaving the attached crash file.

I tried again only this time it did not find the first pass and I had to start from scratch only for it to freeze again before the first pass had even finished. I attach the crash.py

I've upgraded, downgraded - older versions don't freeze as such but simply say that the file was not saved properly and I have changed the video display to sdl(good) without any luck except for the first time I did it.

I have no problems with handbrake but I cannot insert a black border for subtitles with hand brake.

Can anyone tell me from the attached files what the problem is or if there is a clash what to do about it.

Your .ass subtitle file is only using standard US ascii?
Your windows is using English localisation, not another default language?
Try
- cleaning your temp files
- keeping your paths and file names as shortly as possible (example: c:/work/current.mkv & c:/work/current.ass)
- avoid using spaces
- use local hard disks (not usb devices, if this would be the case?)
- shut down all none essential programs on windows
- check cooling: (vents, dust inside computer, ...) careful with vacuum the inside of computers.
- if laptop make sure you don't block air vents from bottom (air circulation)

all I could think of.

remove .idx2 files related to video being edit (work.mkv -> work.idx2) when upgrading

1 The .ass subtitle file is UTF-8.
2 Windows is English (UK).  System locale however is Polish but will that make a difference?
3 Between freezes I have used cccleaner
4 paths and file names are as short as you have shown but will spaces such as in "XXX TVRip" realy make a difference
5 There were no non essential programmes running.  I did have malwarebytes and avg Could these clash?
6 Computer is not overheating - I have read that elsewhere.

Could be

Probably when using second pass, test it.

Disconnect from internet and disable both when doing avidemux editing

Are you using polish characters in ass?
Do you need to burn the subtitle in the video? You could use these as subtitle track in mkv (not burned in to image). Selectable in VLC or some mediaplayers.

OK I'll try all the above including changing system locale.
As for subtitles they tend to be in English and they need to be burned in because selectable Polish subtitles will go in the black border below.

Not particularly they tend to be in a foreign language.  But it also happens when reading ts files which can have dual soundtracks.

Make sure you dont have leftovers from older versions
Full de-install then reinstall might help

I thought I would update in case anyone comes across this in a search.

Nothing above works and I have not found a cure but I have isolated the problem.  In the windows version at least when you try to introduce a black border, possibly resize AND hard burn subtitles TS MKV and FLV source files usually make avidemux freeze.  You can transform or subtitle but you cannot do both at the same time. Do it separately and there is no problem.  This means you can transform the video and then subtitle it but if you do invariably the programme asks you if you want to use the previous first pass.  If you do use the previous first pass avidemux will again freeze.  You have to do a completely new two pass mkv encoding.
