I am running Xubuntu 18.04 32 bit but notice that the 2.76 is only available in 64 bit for linux. Is there a 32 bit version for linux or is all development now for 64 bit systems?
Also are there any instructions for updating or reinstalling Avidemux to the latest build other than from unofficial PPA's.
I am fairly new to linux and can follow instructions to use terminal to install software but not proficient enough to build stuff from packages.

No current 32-bit binaries are provided (there is no policy change here), but the build instructions posted in https://avidemux.org/smif/index.php?msg=90096 should work (albeit entirely untested) for 32-bit systems too. One would miss out on a couple of things like VDPAU and NVENC support as current NVIDIA drivers are AFAIK 64-bit only.

You would be probably the first to try and definitely the first to provide feedback, which would be highly appreciated.

No one is. Packages are built from stuff, not the other way round ;-)

In case of Avidemux, it is not necessary to package or even install the binaries. The application can be run from the build directory as outlined in the linked howto. Steps needed to build Avidemux are trivial on *ubuntu, no proficiency required.
