Can't get fade in/out to do anything

Hello,

I want to fade in/out on a 30 second video.  5 seconds in, 5 seconds out.
Input AVCHD 1080/60p.
Output MPEG4 AVC (x264).
I can't get the fade in/out filter to do anything.
All the other filters I've used work fine.  I have changed the video to 1/2 speed and saved.  I have done contrast and sharpening and saved.  But I can't get the fade in/out to have any effect.

BTW I noticed that this same question was asked about a year ago, and got no replies.

Any help will be much appreciated!

there are 2 fades, both apparently working.

Fade:
- non faded clip
- same clip with fade applied

fade to black, both applied in one go!
same clip used as above
clip with both fades in and out to black applied: Fade to black IN or OUT

Thanks!  I did mine one more time and it worked.  I'll blame the misfire on DPRK hackers.
