Hey there my dearest AviDemux forum,

I am a longtime user of AviDemux on both OS X and Windows and really love this piece of software.

The more I use it and the more I dig into the many encoding options, the more I realize how wonderful this software is.

Usually I record gameplay videos with Fraps at 1080p / 60fps and then convert them to AVC with CRF18, UMH and SuME 10 for best quality.

It was just recently however that I set SubME to 2 (cause wiki told me to never use 1 ;-) ) instead of 10 which resulted in a much faster encoding speed but after the encode I couldn't tell the difference between a SubME 10 encode and the SubME 2 version.

I then reencoded the same video with both SubMe2 and 10 and still couldn't see a difference.

But a quick look at the bitrate (with bitrate viewer) showed me, that the average bitrate of the subme 2 encode was slightly higher.

Now my question is: is it just my eyes that play a trick on me or is SubME 10 really not worth it after all?
Or does CRF mode maybe ignore the Subpixel Refinement setting?

Thanks for enlightening me in advance,

Monti

It depends about what kind of games you record. If you e.g. record sidescrolling 2D games with very static background and blocky graphics, then the subpixel accuracy doesn't usually mean that much.
I am away between 15th of May - 15th of June. (yes, I am playing D3)

hey there and thanks for your reply.

normally I record Battlefield Heroes, a game with comic like GFX. Will try to encode something with more complex GFX to see wether SubME 10 is worth it..
