Hello,

I updated to Avidemux 2.5.3 (previously was using Avidemux 2.5.2). I used the x264 encoder and incorporated .ass (Alpha Substation) subtitles created with Aegisub. The result was a great video but the subtitles that were tagged as being \"Bold\" did not appear in Bold.

This problem occurred only when using Avidemux 2.5.3. I had to revert back to Avidemux 2.5.2 to correct this. Can someone confirm this?

Regards,

Samson

You have some subtitle file we could use for testing?

Hi there,

Sorry for the late reply. (very late indeed)
I've noticed that from Avidemux 2.5.3 and later (including the lastest 2.5.5), that bold subtitles from .ass subtitles files are not being rendered in bold by Avidemux. They just come out in normal unbold text. I've attached a sample subtitle file for you. Can you have a look?

Thank you,
Samson

Hello there,

All text in the subtitle file are supposed to be bold.

Let me know if you require more information.
Thank you for following up.

The bold variable isn't set 1 in any definitions.

Hello,

The "bold" setting in the subtitle was set using Aegisub's "Styles Manager" under the "Subtitles" toolbar menu. This will universally set a text attribute (eg. bold, font size, etc.) for a given "Style" or actor. In my example, the Style is called "Default". You can download Aegisub for free from this URL:

http://www.aegisub.org/

I have re-attached my sample .ass subtitle file and a screenshot of where the "bold" setting is set in Aegisub. To reiterate, Avidemux v2.5.2 is able to "bold" text correctly with these .ass subtitles files. However, with later versions of Avidemux, this was no longer the case. You can confirm this by performing a quick render using Avidemux 2.5.2 and comparing it with another render created with the latest version of Avidemux using this subtitle file.

Thank you for looking into this. Let me know if you need more information.
Your support is greatly appreciated.

My bad, it indeed is -1 for true. I'll ticket this during weekend. Meanwhile the Arial -> Arial Bold change in the file should fix it temporarily.

Hello Agent_007,

Thank you for escalating my issue.
Hopefully, this can be easily resolved.

"Meanwhile the Arial -> Arial Bold change in the file should fix it temporarily."
Do you mean editting the .ass file using a text editor and manually adding the "Bold" flag for each line? Can you give me an example? Sorry, I've gotten too used to using the WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) subtitle editor, so I'm not familiar with editting the subtitle file directly.

Thanks again!

Regards,
Samson

Not tagging each line with bold flag. Selecting the bold font itself. Arial -> Arial Bold.
  • ARIAL.TTF = normal arial font
  • ARIALBD.TTF = bold
  • ARIALI.TTF = italic
  • ARIALBI.TTF = bold italic
